VICTORVILLE – San Bernardino County Regional Parks will host its annual Trout Derby on Saturday, March 7, at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in Victorville.
A trout derby is a fishing competition where participants try to catch the largest trout by weight for prizes.
Cash prizes include $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third place.
For the derby, 1,660 pounds of trout, including lightning trout, will be stocked on Friday, March 6, with 830 pounds placed in Pelican Lake and 830 pounds in Horseshoe Lake.
Both lakes will be closed to public fishing on March 6 and will reopen after the derby concludes.
Regional Parks will have a weigh-in station and encourages participants to allow time to weigh and enter their fish before the 1 p.m. cutoff.
Derby held rain or shine
Gates open at 6:30 a.m., and pre-paid derby fees are encouraged. Fees are $20 per person and $15 per vehicle. A fishing license is required for participants ages 16 and older.
Participants will receive a wristband and packet with derby entry forms and rules. The derby will be held rain or shine, and no refunds will be issued.
A food truck will be on-site with food available for purchase.
The Trout Derby will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mojave Narrows Regional Park, 18000 Yates Rd., Victorville.
