CALIFORNIA – The California Cool Air Rebate (CAR) Program is offering up to $1,500 rebate to eligible Californians to repair leaking air conditioning systems with R-134a refrigerant in cars and light duty trucks.
According to the Car Care Council, leaking refrigerant is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions – more than 1,400 times more harmful than carbon dioxide.
The council is partnering with the Automotive Service Councils of California (ASCCA) to support independent auto repair shops in providing cost-saving solutions while helping California meet its climate goals.
Eligibility
The CAR Program will pay participating repair shops 80% of the cost of qualifying repairs up to a maximum of $1,500 per vehicle ($1,875 repair cost).
To be eligible for the program, consumers must live in California and own a car manufactured between 1993 and 2019, or have an older vehicle that has been retrofitted with R-134a refrigerant.
The program income eligibility requirements are based on 200% of the 2024 federal income poverty level.
Repair shops can apply to participate in the program
As part of the partnership, ASCCA-affiliated shops will have exclusive opportunities to participate in the CAR Program, gaining access to rebate funding, marketing support, and technical training to help them integrate energy-efficient A/C services into their offerings.
