CALIFORNIA – California State Parks invites residents and visitors to join free guided hikes at over 90 locations across the state on New Year’s Day.

State parks says the guided hikes are an effort to kick off 2025 in a healthy way and enjoy the fresh air.

“First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime,” says a statement on the website.

They go on to say that nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.

State Parks encourages hikers to check out details on the interactive map for start times and hike descriptions.

On the map, visitors can search for hikes by park name, county and region. Visitors can also type in their address and it will show nearby hikes taking place.

Participants are also able to see the status of the hike and the last time it was updated. By zooming into the map, they can find hikes taking place near that region of the map. In addition, the web page provides information on new hiking opportunities around the holiday.

They say make sure to dress in layers, bring plenty of snacks and water, and appropriate hiking shoes. For more information on the latest safety tips click here.
