CA launching $2,000 e-bike voucher program this month

CALIFORNIA – California is launching, December 18, a $2,000 voucher program for eligible residents to go towards the purchase of a new electric bike (e-bike).

The California E-Bike Incentive Project is a statewide incentive program that aims to promote clean commuting options for low-income residents.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) established the program in 2021 to support the state’s broader environmental and equity objectives.

1,500 incentive vouchers awarded during the first window

According to CalBike, the program is delayed in its launch – CARB unveiled a proposed launch plan that included starting in Q2 of 2024 extending through August 2025.

However, the project website says application will now be accepted starting December 18 with 1,500 incentive vouchers awarded during the first window.

The application window will be opened every 3-4 months and additional window information will be announced in the future.

Eligibility

California residents 18 and older who meet low-income requirements are eligible to apply. The online portal requires applicants to submit residency verification, income verification and education/safety training requirements.

The base voucher is $1,750 and an additional $250 is allotted to priority applicants.

The website says applicants must receive an approval notification with the incentive voucher prior to purchasing the e-bike. Purchases made before receiving these will not be eligible for the incentive.

The voucher can be used towards the purchase of an eligible e-bike and accessories including helmet, bike lock, racks, baskets, fenders, mirrors, reflective clothing, and lights at an approved retailer.
