Granite Hills taking on Salesian High in CIF playoff game this Friday

APPLE VALLEY – After beating Barstow and winning their first Desert Sky League title, Granite Hills (8-2) is headed to CIF playoffs, Friday, against Salesian High (9-1) from Boyle Heights.

Granite Hills is inviting the community out to the game, taking place at Bass Stadium, to help support the team.

Historic season

“We have had a historic season this year and still have plenty of opportunities ahead to continue making history,” said Granite Hills assistant coach Tom Medina. “The win against Silverado was the first time we had beaten them since the 2010 football season and the first time of the Coach Gonzalez era.”

Medina said the win against Barstow has to be considered the biggest win in program history to date since they achieved their first Desert Sky League title with that win.

Season Highlights

Medina says Granite Hills running back Kameron Smith is the driving force behind their run game. Smith rushed for 2,076 yards this year.

In addition, tight end Ben Montoya and offensive lineman Ivan Maring have stood out on film. Offensive lineman Luke Alnemri has also been a consistent leader on the field.

“Defensively – we have played great team defense. We pride ourselves on swarming to the ball and we have been fairly consistent,” said Medina. “Our linebackers have played a key role led by Joey Soto, Berto Sanchez, Christian Long and KJ Lockhart.”
