Report says $80,013 living wage is required to live in California

CALIFORNIA – A GoBankingRates report, published last month, says Californians need to earn $80,013 to live in the state.

“Because the cost of goods has increased so much, the living wage needed for a single person has also risen across the country. But how much you need to live varies dramatically by state,” said the GoBankingRates report.

Hawaii ($112,411) and Massachusetts ($87,909) took the top two spots with California coming in third for the highest living wages required to reside in a state.

Mississippi came in number one for the lowest living wage needed – $45,906.

Do the jobs with the most openings provide a sufficient living wage?

The California Employment Development Department (EDD) lists 10 occupations with the most job openings, however, none of the salaries are close to the required living wage for California.

Office clerks earning $39,826 and cooks earning $38,906 come in the first and second highest earners for most job openings. The average salary for these jobs is $16.90 an hour.

In order for California workers to earn the GoBankingRates estimated living wage, a salary of $38.46 an hour is required.
