San Bernardino County hosting job fair after Yellow Corp. lays off 30,000 employees nationwide

VICTORVILLE – The High Desert America’s Job Center is hosting a Rapid Response Job Fair and Resource Presentation, August 24, for Yellow Corp employees who recently lost their jobs.

After declaring bankruptcy earlier this month, Yellow Corp has put 30,000 people nationwide out of work.

According to Pensions & Investments, union employees will still take home their pension benefits, however, the company’s downward spiral means those benefits remain reduced despite a U.S. government bailout of their union pension fund earlier this year.

Upcoming Job Fair

The High Desert America’s Job Center in Victorville is hosting a presentation that will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m., followed by the Job Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Presenters will discuss:

  • Unemployment Insurance Benefits
  • America’s Job Centers of California
  • COBRA – Continued Medical Coverage
  • 401k Options
  • Affordable Care Act
  • Child Support Obligations
  • Re-Employment Opportunities
  • Training Grants for a New Career

Rapid Response

San Bernardino County’s first Rapid Response Community Resource Fair was developed after United Furniture Industries (UFI) laid off more than 300 employees in the High Desert without advance notice just before Thanksgiving 2022.

According to the county, when Workforce Development was alerted, staff quickly mobilized businesses and community partners to help connect those laid off to available employment opportunities, as well as various other community resources.

Approximately 275 of the affected UFI employees were offered new employment opportunities as a result.
