NATIONWIDE – Walmart announced the expansion of their Fleet Development Program to include store associates interested in getting a commercial driver’s license (CDL). The Associate-to-Driver Program paid training allows associates to become a driver with a starting salary up to $110,000.

Although there are 13,000 drivers in the Walmart Private Fleet, the company continues to make efforts to expand the department.

Last year, Walmart launched the Fleet Development Program giving supply chain associates in select parts of the country a path to earn their CDL to become full-fledged Private Fleet Walmart drivers.

The program now allows associates working in stores, distribution centers, fulfillment centers and transportation offices to participate in the program.

Associates working within a 50 miles radius of a participating transportation office are eligible to apply to the Associate-to-Driver program.

“After they complete the 12-week training course and earn their CDLs, they have a coveted Walmart driving job ready to step into. Walmart drivers can make up to $110,000 in their first year with the company, in addition to the suite of benefits the company offers,” states a Walmart news release dated January 18, 2023.

Current Walmart driving instructors provide the training to associates. The company says there’s no better option. The American Trucking Association has awarded Walmart the Safest Fleet in the Over 250 Million Mile Division for six consecutive years.

Recent Associate-to-Driver graduate Levor Franklin, who now works as Walmart driver, gives advice to beginners with their CDL.

“The thing that helped me the most was getting the routine down. It takes a lot of the edge off once you get a routine,” said Franklin.
