VICTORVILLE – Victorville will be holding its first technical assistance workshop, Tuesday, Nov. 29, to help nonprofit organizations prepare grants applications. Over $1.9 million is available in funding that will be used to benefit Victorville residents.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awards Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to Victorville on an annual basis to be used for activities such as property acquisition, rehabilitation, or construction of public facilities, and public services that benefit low- and moderate-income persons.

HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) money is also available that funds a wide range of activities – building, buying, and rehabilitating affordable housing for rent or homeownership or providing direct rental assistance to low-income people. 

Victorville has identified areas of priority for the grant funding:

Supportive services for the homeless and at risk that include:

• Supporting the development of “one stop” resource centers to assist homeless persons to acquire the necessary documentation and consultation (mental health, physical health and nutrition, job skills training, identification, social security and disability benefits, etc.) to achieve reentry into employment and housing; 
• Food and nutrition services; 
• Utility assistance.

Human services that include:

• Supporting programs that encourage the development of responsible, motivated and educated youth; 
• Supporting the development of arts, music and culture in the community; 
• Encouraging programs that promote a healthy lifestyle. 

Need to increase economic development and employment opportunities that include:

• Increasing job opportunity through education and job training programs; 
• Encouraging small business development through business practices and fundamentals education; 
• Collaborating with state, county and local agencies that offer trade skills training and basic job search techniques. 

Housing programs that include:

• Transitional shelters; 
• Affordable housing for multi-family, single family, veterans; rehabilitation- owner occupied and rental; 
• Down payment assistance.

Accessibility and mobility that include:

• Developing and support efforts to improve mobility in the community; 
• Identifying and remove barriers that impede accessibility in the community; 
• Supporting transit systems, mass and specialized, that enable residents to access destinations for employment, education, recreation and other essential purposes;
