CA settlement administrator accepting claims up to $5,000 for Nissan defects

CALIFORNIA – California-based settlement administrator for a class action against Nissan is now accepting claims up to $5,000 or full costs of repairs for certain Nissan vehicles and other benefits until July 3rd.

Plaintiffs in the class action allege that Nissan was aware of manufacturing defects in the 2015-2018 Nissan Murano and 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima vehicles that could lead to malfunctions in their continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The three plaintiffs in the case said they would not have purchased their vehicles if they had been informed about the CVT defect.

They filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of themselves and all others affected by the vehicle defects.

Nissan’s CVT technology plagued by manufacturing defects

The 2003 Nissan Murano was the first U.S. vehicle that Nissan equipped with a CVT transmission.

A CVT is a type of automatic transmission that is supposed to provide seamless acceleration without the distinct gear shifts of a traditional transmission.

According to the court document, all 2015-2018 Nissan Murano and 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima vehicles come equipped with the same or substantially similar CVT.

“Nissan’s widespread adoption of CVT technology, however, has been consistently plagued by design and manufacturing defects that render CVT equipped Nissan vehicles unreliable and unreasonably dangerous to operate,” claim the plaintiffs.

Puts drivers at risk of being rear ended

The plaintiffs noted that many Nissan owners report experiencing significant delays in their vehicle’s response when accelerating from a stop or while in motion.

This delay in response is often accompanied by the engine revving while the driver depresses the gas pedal with little to no increase in vehicle speed.

The CVT defect has been documented to occur without warning during vehicle operation.

The plaintiffs argue it poses an unreasonable safety hazard that includes being unable to maintain the proper speed to integrate seamlessly into the flow of traffic.

They said it puts drivers at risk of being rear ended.

Warranty extension and reimbursement for repairs

Settlement administrator announced that people who purchased an affected vehicle purchased in the United States prior to April 4, 2025 can file a claim.

There are several possible benefits of the settlement.

Nissan will extend the warranty for the transmission, including key parts like the valve body, torque converter, and the Automatic Transmission Control Unit (ATCU), to 84 months or 84,000 miles, whichever comes first, starting from the original purchase date and mileage.

Even if the vehicle is no longer covered under the extended warranty as of the effective date of settlement, Nissan will refund claimants for qualifying transmission repairs that were paid for.

If the repair was done at a Nissan dealership, claimants will get a full refund. If it was done elsewhere, Nissan will cover up to $5,000.

Documentation of qualifying repairs, such as receipts, work orders and credit card statements is required.

$1,500 voucher towards new lease or purchase

If a claimant currently or formerly owned a vehicle listed in the class action and had two or more repairs or replacements of the transmission or ATCU, they may be eligible for a $1,500 voucher toward the purchase or lease of a new Nissan or Infiniti.

If the claimant is eligible for both the voucher and reimbursement for repairs, they must choose one or the other – they can’t receive both.
