The college says the course is open to anyone looking to get into a career in construction or those looking to gain handyman skills.

California invests in apprenticeships

California has increased its investment in apprenticeship programs in recent years to enhance workforce development across various industries.

In the 2022–2023 state budget, over $231 million was allocated for apprenticeship-related spending, with plans to invest more than $480 million over the subsequent three years.

Funding includes $65 million to create a youth apprenticeship grant program, $15 million to fund a unit that works to advance women in construction, and an increase of over 30% to the reimbursement rate for training in building and construction apprenticeships.

In addition, $175 million went towards creating the Apprenticeship Innovation Funding (AIF) for programs that include working with technologies like robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and 3D printing.

AIF recently awarded $46,000 to VVC for their advanced manufacturing program to serve 28 apprentices.

Upcoming construction readiness course

The college encourages community members interested in construction, plumbing, electrical, welding and other trades to participate in the introductory course. In addition, students will get a chance to visit local unions to learn about employment opportunities.

The 6 week course is from January 7th through February 13th, on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday’s from 8am – 5:30pm.

The course is free, although a campus parking permit is required.

VVC is located at 18422 Bear Valley Rd. in Victorville.
