Apple Valley deputies shoot man after foot pursuit

APPLE VALLEY – Around 10:29 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, Apple Valley deputies responded to reports of a man acting erratically and creating a roadway hazard on the 17900 block of Highway 18.

Deputies located the man, identified as Anthony Thomas Bray, 38, of Apple Valley, in the roadway.

Bray ran through the intersection and crossed the highway as deputies approached. Deputies pursued him into an alley, where he resisted arrest and produced an edged weapon.

Deputies shot Bray during the encounter.

Bray was transported to a local hospital and later transferred to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he remains.  

The Specialized Investigations Division responded and assumed the investigation.
