CALIFORNIA – The Oakland Police Department (OPD) announced October 18 that it is investigating an in-custody death.
KTVU-TV identified former NFL running back Doug Martin, 36, as the person who died in police custody over an alleged break-in call.
According to OPD, the incident occurred around 4:15 a.m. on October 18 in the 11000 block of Ettrick Street. Officers responded to reports of a break-in at a nearby residence.
At the same time, officers were alerted to a medical emergency involving the suspected intruder. Officers found the individual inside the home.
A brief struggle occurred as officers tried to detain the individual. After being detained, the individual became unresponsive.
Paramedics provided aid and transported the individual to a nearby hospital. The individual later died at the hospital.
Per OPD policy, the officer(s) involved have been placed on paid administrative leave. Following OPD policy, the in-custody death is being investigated by the Homicide Section, Internal Affairs, the Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
OPD said it remains committed to transparency. However, to protect the integrity of the investigation, information release is limited at this time.
Further details will be released as soon as the investigation and the law permit.
Martin was nicknamed the “Muscle Hamster”
Martin, nicknamed the “Muscle Hamster,” was an NFL running back who played for the Buccaneers and Raiders.
Drafted from Boise State in 2012, he earned two Pro Bowl selections and had over 1,400 rushing yards in both 2012 and 2015, making him one of the Buccaneers’ most dynamic players of the 2010s.
In a statement, Martin’s family confirmed his death, “It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning.”
The Buccaneers paid tribute to Martin in a post on social media.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin … during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise,” the team said.
