CALIFORNIA — Bonhams announced a collaboration with American Public Television (APT) to auction thirty original paintings by Joy of Painting host and American artist Bob Ross (1942–1995).

The series of sales will begin this November and continue through 2026, with 100% of APT’s net proceeds benefiting PBS and public television stations nationwide.

In July 2025, Congress passed the Rescissions Act, eliminating $1.1 billion in future funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which supports PBS and NPR stations nationwide.

As a result, PBS announced a 21% budget cut and staff layoffs, with smaller and rural stations facing the greatest impact.

Winter’s Peace estimated at $30,000 to $50,000

The first auction, taking place November 11 in Los Angeles, will feature three of Ross’s original works as part of Bonhams’ California & Western Art sale.

The remaining twenty-seven paintings will be offered through 2026 at Bonhams salerooms in New York, Boston, and Los Angeles.

Bonhams Skinner general manager Robin Starr said the auction house is “honoured to offer this exceptional selection,” noting that Ross’s work continues to inspire collectors and fans alike.

“…with his market steadily rising, the combination of live-on-air works on offer, and proceeds supporting public television, we’re expecting to see spirited bidding,” Starr said.

Leading the first sale is Winter’s Peace (1993), painted live on-air during the 30th season of The Joy of Painting and estimated at $30,000 to $50,000.

Also featured is Home in the Valley (1993), another on-air painting completed in 26 minutes, estimated at $30,000 to $50,000; and Cliffside (1990), created for The Joy of Painting, Volume 20 instructional book, estimated at $25,000 to $45,000.

Hosted over 400 episodes

Ross became a household name through his PBS series The Joy of Painting. He hosted over 400 episodes between 1983 and 1994.

His calm demeanor, encouraging voice, and distinctive Wet-on-Wet Technique made him one of America’s most recognizable artists, inspiring millions to pick up a brush.
