Newsom shares video of Modi, Putin, and Xi amid National Guard discussion

CALIFORNIA – California governor Gavin Newsom shared a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Vladimir Putin, and President Xi Jinping laughing and walking arm-in-arm at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin over the Labor Day weekend.

“But have no fear, Trump is sending the Guard to Chicago,” Newsom posted on X.

President Donald Trump has signaled intentions to send National Guard troops to Chicago, similar to deployments in L.A. and D.C., under the stated aim of curbing crime and undocumented immigration.

In response, Democratic leaders – including Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson, have launched a resistance campaign, filing executive orders prohibiting cooperation between local police and federal or National Guard personnel.

Thousands of protesters marched in downtown Chicago on Labor Day, voicing opposition to what they call federal overreach under the guise of law enforcement. Many pointed out that violent crime in major U.S. cities, including Chicago, has declined.

Modi, Putin, and Xi show unity

The video Newsom shared showed Modi, Putin and Xi walking hand-in-hand and embracing in a display of camaraderie at the SCO summit.

The summit included a pre-opening informal huddle among the Russia-India-China (RIC) leaders.

Xi urged members to resist “bullying behavior” by unnamed nations  – widely interpreted as targeting the U.S., while proposing new economic tools and $1.4 billion in loans to SCO members.

Putin defended Russia’s actions in Ukraine as responses to NATO expansion. He called for addressing the “root causes” of the conflict and framed the SCO as a counterweight to U.S. influence.

Despite border tensions with China, Modi joined Xi and Putin in the public show of camaraderie, stressing that India and China should be partners.
