SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY – On August 3 at 3:45 p.m., San Bernardino County Fire responded to a hiker screaming for help at Big Falls, a popular hiking and waterfall spot within the San Bernardino National Forest.

The caller couldn’t see the hiker but heard their cries for help. The hiker had slipped on a wet, slippery part of the falls and fell onto the rocks below.

First responders hiked in, found a seriously injured hiker, and performed a medical assessment.

A rescue helicopter was called. The hoist-capable helicopter was the fastest, safest, and most efficient way to extract the patient.

A paramedic was lowered by helicopter and, with ground crew, secured the patient in a Stokes basket, a type of rescue stretcher. The patient was quickly flown to a local trauma center.

Responding units included a rescue unit, fire engine, battalion chief, rescue helicopter, and public information officer.

No injuries were reported among civilians, firefighters, or air crew.

Stay on marked trails

San Bernardino County Fire urges visitors to stay on marked trails, avoid climbing near waterfalls, and keep a safe distance from slippery or steep areas.

Serious injuries are common at Big Falls – please stay safe and make smart choices.

San Bernardino County Fire thanks the county sheriff’s aviation department for their help.
