APPLE VALLEY – The Apple Valley Police Department will be out July 26, from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence (DUI).

Apple Valley deputy Esparza said designating a sober driver can save lives.

“Drunk driving is 100 percent preventable. We’re asking everyone to think of your loved ones, friends, and family before getting behind the wheel. Make a plan to get home safely,” said Esparza.

Impaired driving is not just from alcohol

The Apple Valley Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs can impair driving.

The department urges drivers to follow usage directions and read warning labels about driving.

While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence is still illegal.

A first-time DUI can result in $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.

This program is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
