Low-budget airline announces plans to discontinue California operations

CALIFORNIA – Avelo Airlines, a low-budget carrier based in Houston, announced July 14 that it will close its base at Hollywood Burbank Airport and exit all West Coast operations by December 2025 due to ongoing financial losses and competition.

According to a press release, these are the final days Avelo will operate flights from each of these airports:

  • Portland/Salem, OR (SLE) – 8‍/1‍0/20‍25
  • Sonoma County, CA (STS) and Las Vegas, NV (LAS) – 8/1‍1/20‍25
  • Kalispell, MT (FCA) – 8‍/3‍0/20‍25
  • Redmond/Bend, OR (RDM) and Eugene, OR (EUG) – 1‍2/1/20‍25
  • Eureka/Arcata, CA (ACV), Pasco/Tri-Cities, WA (PSC), Medford, OR (MFR), and Burbank, CA (BUR) – 1‍2/2/20‍25

The company said the decision was not easy.

“Our company’s deepest operational roots are in BUR, having launched our first flight there over four years ago during the COVID pandemic…We believe the continuation of service from BUR in the current operating environment will not deliver adequate financial returns in a highly competitive backdrop,” wrote Avelo.

Avelo said it will shift BUR aircraft to areas with better long-term growth and expand its East Coast operations.

Carrier faced backlash for agreeing to operate ICE deportation flights

The company faced backlash, earlier this year, for agreeing to operate deportation flights for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), however, Avelo said the decision to cease West Coast operations is unrelated.
