CALIFORNIA – Joby Aviation, a company developing electric air taxis for commercial passenger service, announced July 15 that it is doubling aircraft production at its Marina, California site as part of its expansion with plans to add hundreds of full-time jobs.

The expanded site now covers about 435,500 square feet to support commercial scale up. The company also added a new aircraft to expand its flight test program.

Joby chief product officer Eric Allison said reimagining urban mobility takes speed, scale and precision manufacturing.

Our expanded manufacturing footprint in both California and Ohio is preparing us to do just that,” said Allison.

California awarded Joby a $9.8 million grant

In 2023, California awarded Joby a $9.8 million CalCompetes grant to fund the expansion and to create 690 new roles statewide for increased aircraft production.

The company develops and tests its aircraft in California and Ohio using tools like data analytics and 3D printing.

They said their in-house approach speeds development, ensures quality, and supports new tech like hydrogen-electric propulsion.

In addition, Toyota engineers work closely with Joby on design, manufacturing and quality, helping streamline processes and accelerate production.

Expanded CA site will produce up to 24 aircraft per year

Once fully operational, Joby’s expanded Marina site will produce up to 24 aircraft per year and support FAA certification, testing, training and maintenance.

The company said the Marina site complements its broader manufacturing network in Santa Cruz and San Carlos, while its Dayton, Ohio facility is ramping up to eventually produce 500 aircraft annually.
