Newsom says Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” puts 686,000 California jobs at risk

CALIFORNIA – Governor Gavin Newsom said President Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” puts 686,000 California jobs at risk, following its passage by House Republicans.

According to Newsom, the bill also reduces support for health care, food assistance, and working families in order to prioritize tax cuts for high-income earners.

“With this measure, Donald J. Trump’s legacy is now forever cemented: he has created a more unequal, more indebted, and more dangerous America. Shame on him,” said Newsom.

Proposed cuts affecting Californians

The proposed cuts affecting Californians include:

  • Potential impact on an estimated 686,000 California jobs due to the rollback of clean energy tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act. According to North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU), the measure could severely affect employment in the clean energy sector.
  • A reduction of over $28.4 billion in federal Medicaid funding to California, potentially increasing financial burdens for patients and threatening the ability of health care providers to maintain services.
  • Cuts to wildfire prevention efforts, including forest management programs and the elimination of personnel dedicated to fighting wildfires.

Nationwide, the bill would reduce public safety funding, could strip health coverage from 17 million people by 2034, end food assistance for 3 million people and make other cuts.
