California DMV launches online renewal for commercial driver’s licenses

Published on

CALIFORNIA – The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced, June 10, that eligible commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders can now renew online up to 120 days before the renewal date.

DMV Director Steve Gordon said commercial drivers keep California’s economy moving.

“This new online renewal service is another step in making DMV services faster, easier and available without a trip to the office,” said Gordon.

The DMV said its new online CDL renewal service is part of the Newsom Administration’s digital transformation for efficient government through innovation and technology. Key benefits are:

  • It’s secure: Customer information is protected and safe.

  • It’s convenient: CDL holders can choose from various payment methods and complete their transactions on their mobile device, desktop or tablet.

  • It’s paperless: Customers can upload required documents, such as Transportation Security Administration (TSA) clearance and medical exam records.

  • It fits busy schedules: CDL holders can renew up to 120 days before their license expires.

Before Going to an Office — Try Online First

The DMV has taken many steps to expand digital services. Most DMV tasks do not require an office visit, including simple self-service transactions that are no longer available in offices.

The department recommends customers use its online services and other service channels to complete transactions, including eligible driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals.

They can also use the Service Advisor on the DMV website to explore their options to complete DMV tasks.

To sign up for paperless vehicle registration and driver’s license renewal notices, customers must opt in by creating a secure online account and registering at dmv.ca.gov.
