CALIFORNIA – Party City recently updated its website on the closure of over 850 stores nationwide, including 88 in California.

After 40 years in business, the company said they are having a going-out-of-business sale with up to 50% percent off all items.

In a statement on the site, Party City says given their long history supporting their customers’ most joyous moments, it is all the more difficult to share that they will soon be closing their doors.

“Like many retailers, we’ve been operating in an immensely challenging environment with inflationary pressures on both costs and consumer spending, and while we did everything we could to navigate these headwinds, our very best efforts were ultimately not enough to overcome these challenges,” said the Party City statement.

2024 has been marked by a wave of closures

The retail industry in 2024 has been marked by a wave of closures. In addition to Party City, Big Lots and 99 Cents Only Stores announced they would be permanently closing all stores across the country.

Meanwhile, several other brands have opted to reduce their footprint rather than fully shuttering.

Rite Aid closed 550 of its stores, Dollar Tree plans to close approximately 1,000 stores across its Dollar Tree and Family Dollar brands and Foot Locker announced its plans to close 400 stores by 2026.

These closures highlight the challenges traditional retailers face as they grapple with rising costs, shifting consumer behavior, and the dominance of e-commerce.

Everything must go

Party City says everything must go and their stores are currently open.

“We are offering incredible deals and deep discounts on merchandise at our locations nationwide,” said the statement.
