First Daiso store opening in the High Desert

APPLE VALLEY — Daiso, a Japanese discount retailer, is opening its first store location in the High Desert, with an anticipated launch in January 2025. The store will be located in the Apple Valley Jess Ranch Marketplace.

The retailer, known for its stationery and snacks, posted “Coming Soon” signs on the permanently closed Cozy Fox store located next to Winco.

“Creating joy through our unique and affordable products…from Japanese inspired household goods, to stationery, beauty products, food and more,” reads the Daiso signage.

At Daiso, the majority of products are priced at around $1.75, but the store also offers higher-end items that can cost up to $15.25.

These higher-priced products typically include specialty goods such as cookware, home decor, or premium craft supplies.

The retailer prices items in yen, adding an authentic Japanese element to its U.S. operations.

Daiso expands while other discount stores face closures

According to Daiso, there are 6,000 store locations across the world, with over 120 in the U.S. They say the target is to have over 1,000 U.S. stores by 2030.

Recent store openings in California, Arizona, and Texas highlight the retailer’s ongoing expansion in key markets to meet growing demand for affordable, versatile products.

Daiso vice president of marketing for the U.S. division Dani Davis says that a strong social media response has mapped out a route for their expansion with the company’s accounts  overwhelmed with requests from people asking them to expand to their local areas.

This expansion goes against a recent trend of discount brand store closures.

In June, Dollar Tree announced that it will close nearly 1,000 stores over the next several years, after suffering significant losses listed in its first quarter earnings report.

In addition, 99 Cents Only stores announced, in April, that they would be permanently closing all 371 locations.
