Yamaha to leave California headquarters amid rising tariff costs

CALIFORNIA – Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (Tokyo: 7272) announced February 26 that it will relocate its U.S. headquarters from Cypress, California, to Kennesaw, Georgia.

The company said it is restructuring its U.S. operations to improve profitability amid rising tariff costs and changing market conditions.

The relocation will take place from late 2026 through 2028.

As part of the move, Yamaha will sell its Cypress property, including the land, offices, and warehouses.

The company said the relocation is part of its plan to improve efficiency and boost profits in the United States.

The Cypress facility has served as Yamaha’s U.S. headquarters for nearly 50 years, after the company acquired the land in 1978 and opened the office in 1979.

However, as its U.S. business focus shifted, the company moved its Marine division to Kennesaw in 1999 and its Motorsports division there in 2019.

As a result, the 25.1-acre Cypress site now primarily houses corporate offices and financial services.

The company plans a temporary sale-leaseback to maintain operations and ensure a smooth transition to Kennesaw.

The sale price, buyer, and timing are still under review.

Corporate Consolidation in California

Yamaha’s relocation comes as several automotive companies have consolidated California operations in recent years.

Nissan closed its La Jolla design studio as part of a worldwide restructuring, while Ford exited its Irvine design studio in 2025.

Advance Auto Parts closed all 137 of its California locations by March 2025, resulting in more than 1,600 job losses.

Yamaha said its restructuring efforts are intended to build a more resilient profit model that is not solely reliant on revenue growth.
