CARB accepting public comment on proposal that could increase gas by 50 cents per gallon

Published on

CALIFORNIA – The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is holding a public hearing, November 8, to decide on a proposal that could raise the price of gas by 50 cents per gallon along with annual price increases.

According to AAA, the average price of gas in California is $4.59 per gallon above the national average of $3.13, as of October 28.

State officials now say they cannot estimate the price increase as a result of the proposed reforms to the Low Carbon Fuel Standards (LCFS).

However, a report published by CARB staff in September 2023 indicated that the price of fuel would increase on an annual basis — starting in 2024 with 12 cents per gallon.

Annual price increase

The LCFS is undergoing proposed amendments aimed at accelerating the reduction of carbon emissions from transportation fuels.

This includes requiring an increased production of low-carbon fuels and adoption of new technologies that may potentially raise production costs – consequently, gasoline prices.

According to the proposal, the price of gas could increase by 47 cents per gallon in 2025 and 52 cents by 2026. Diesel prices could rise by 59 cents in 2025 and 66 cents in 2026.
