CalHFA issues fraud alert for 20% down payment assistance program applicants

CALIFORNIA – The California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA) issued a fraud alert, June 6, about a potential scam surrounding the Dream For All (DFA) down payment assistance program.

CalHFA will only require you to provide information through your DFA Portal. If you receive links from a suspicious email or text, do not click links. Instead, navigate to the DFA portal where you created your account for the latest communications on your application,” said the CalHFA email update.

Application status update

CalHFA is no longer accepting applications for the program. They provided an update on the status of the application process.

If you have already applied and wish to check the status of your application, please access your account on the Voucher Portal, and keep an eye on the email account you used to apply,” said the email update.

CalHFA is currently auditing applications and they have not issued vouchers yet. The agency will notify applicants through the portal once they complete the audit. They expect it to be complete by the end of June.

“Vouchers will be issued in late Spring and will continue until the program is closed, which is currently expected to take place by the end of 2024,” said a statement on the website.

Dream For All

The DFA program provides 20% down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers to be used in conjunction with the Dream For All Conventional first mortgage for down payment and/or closing costs.

Upon sale or transfer of the home, the homebuyer repays the original down payment loan, plus a share of the appreciation in the value of the home.
