Department of Labor reports over 90,000 California workers lost their job in the last two weeks

CALIFORNIA – The Department of Labor (DOL) published, June 13, an unemployment insurance weekly claims advance report showing 90,000 California workers lost their job in the last two weeks.

The report states that the initial claims filed during the week ending June 8 for California is 51,110. In the previous week, 40,799 workers filed for an initial claim. The total is over 90,000 Californians who became unemployed and seeking their earned benefits.

Private Education and Health Services largest gain 

According to the California Employment Development Department (EDD), the latest employment data from for the month of April 2024, shows that five of the state’s 11 industry sectors gained jobs in April.

Private Education and Health Services posted the largest month-over gain (+11,900 jobs) for the fourth consecutive month. Other industries gains were:

  • Trade, Transportation and Utilities (+5,100 jobs)
  • Leisure and Hospitality (+3,100 jobs)
  • Government (+2,600 jobs)
  • Mining and Logging (+100 jobs)

Job reduction were in these industries:

  • Information (-600 jobs)
  • Financial Activities (-1,400 jobs)
  • Professional and Business Services (-4,300 jobs)
  • Manufacturing (-5,300 jobs)
  • Construction (-6,000 jobs)

Despite the gains in sectors like Private Education and Health Services, the overall net gain was +5,200 nonfarm jobs for April. Data for June will be released in July.

California has gained 3,057,800 jobs since April 2020

According to the state, the jobs market expansion entered its 48th month in April 2024. Since April 2020, California has gained 3,057,800 jobs, which averages out to 63,704 per month.

In April, the state said there were 45,136 new unemployment insurance claims.
