STATEWIDE – The California Film Commission is accepting applications, due September 16, for a 7-week free production accounting course. The course will equip students throughout California with the skills and connections to obtain an entry-level position in TV & Film Production Accounting.

According to a statement, the program “recognizes the industry need for more production accountants, and more diversification in this workforce pipeline.” It teaches the fundamentals of what it takes to enter production accounting for film and television.

Ida Lee Henderson, a 30+ year production accounting professional wrote the course and will be teaching it.

The pilot is part of the California Film and Television Tax Credit Program 3.0 – a training and outreach program targeting individuals from underserved communities. This Career Pathway program is not an internship or apprenticeship program; its goal is to provide the skills and access that leads to careers in the entertainment industry and membership in the below-the-line craft unions. It is funded annually through the year 2025.

Ziprecruiter.com estimates that the majority of Film Production Accountant salaries currently range between $43,000 to $84,500 with top earners (90th percentile) making $127,500 annually across the United States.

The program also makes counselors available to students as well as access to a mentor who works in the industry. According to the site, relationships matter in the entertainment industry and the mentorship provides critical guidance and support for the students. The mentors are union members which will strengthen the relationship between the student, the craft unions, and employment opportunities.

The production accounting distance learning course begins September 26, 2022.
