
APPLE VALLEY – On March 7, 2026, at about 9:40 p.m., deputies from the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station and emergency crews responded to a five-vehicle crash on State Highway 18 west of Mile Marker 92.5 in Apple Valley.
During the investigation, deputies determined a white Nissan Frontier driven by a 74-year-old man from Santa Ana was traveling westbound in the eastbound No. 1 lane of State Highway 18 toward Tao Road.
The Nissan Frontier caused a five-vehicle crash involving four other drivers.
The driver suffered major injuries and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. He later died from his injuries. The identity of the driver is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
Two other drivers were injured and transported by ambulance to a local hospital.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Major Accident Investigative Team (MAIT) took over the investigation.
Highway closures lasted hours
Eastbound State Highway 18 was closed between Tao Road and Piute Road for about three hours.
Both directions of Outer State Highway 18 South were closed between Atnah Road and Mandan Road for about two hours as deputies processed the scene and interviewed witnesses.
