APPLE VALLEY – The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said February 12 that a local resident brought suspected Civil War–era cannonballs to the Apple Valley station for evaluation.

During inspection, the items were found to have fuses and could be explosive.

As a precaution, staff activated safety protocols, contacted the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Bomb and Arson Division, and set up a safety perimeter.

The station was temporarily closed to the public during the assessment. Bombs and Arson specialists quickly secured the items for safe disposal.

No injuries were reported, and the public remained safe outside the perimeter.

The Apple Valley Police Department thanks the community and reminds residents not to handle or move suspected explosives or military ordnance.

Instead, leave the item in place and contact law enforcement immediately.
