California doctor accused of trafficking abortion pills across state lines

CALIFORNIA – A Texas man expanded his lawsuit on February 1, claiming a California doctor illegally provided abortion pills to his girlfriend in the state.

Jerry Rodriguez sued Dr. Rémy Coeytaux in a Texas federal court in July 2025, alleging the doctor caused the wrongful death of his child.

He filed an amended complaint Sunday, seeking an injunction under a new law that bars anyone from sending abortion pills into the state.

Texas recently enacted House Bill 7 that took effect on December 4, 2025, allowing private citizens to sue anyone who manufactures, distributes, mails or provides abortion‑inducing medication to or from the state.

The law allows individuals with a connection to the fetus—such as the father or other relatives—to bring suit for at least $100,000 per alleged violation.

The law explicitly allows Texans to sue providers in other states, even if those states have “shield laws” protecting abortion providers.

The law does not allow lawsuits against the mother who takes the abortion pills and includes exceptions for ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages.

Coeytaux sent the abortion-inducing drugs to Texas

According to court documents, Rodriguez alleges that Coeytaux sent abortion-inducing drugs into Texas that resulted in the death of his unborn child.

Rodriguez began dating Kendal Garza in June 2024. In July, Kendal became pregnant with Rodriguez’s child.

Kendal reportedly planned to continue the pregnancy, but her estranged husband, Adam Garza, did not support it.

She had legally separated from Adam years before she began dating Rodriguez but had not finalized a divorce.

On September 16, Adam Garza is alleged to have ordered abortion pills online from Coeytaux in connection with the pregnancy. The receipt lists a $150 purchase from “Remy Coeytaux MD PC” described as “‘Aed axes Kendal Garza.”

“Aed axes” is a homophone for “Aid Access,” which sends abortion pills to jurisdictions where abortion is illegal, according to court documents.

Coeytaux sent the pills to Adam in Galveston County, Texas.

Kendal told Rodriguez that Adam provided her with the pills and pressured her to use them. Over 10 weeks pregnant, she reportedly took them at her mother’s house in Galveston County, ending the pregnancy.

Kendal became pregnant again

In late October 2024, Kendal became pregnant again with Rodriguez’s child.

Kendal reportedly welcomed the pregnancy and told Rodriguez she planned to carry the child, a son, to term. On January 18, 2025, they attended a doctor’s appointment and received sonograms of their baby boy.

In January, Kendal reportedly took abortion pills supplied by Adam at his Galveston County home, terminating her pregnancy with Rodriguez’s son.

While nearly three months pregnant, Kendal reportedly proceeded with the abortion despite Rodriguez’s objections. She later texted him that she had cut the baby boy’s umbilical cord and buried him, without indicating where.

Seeking to block distribution of abortion pills in Texas

Rodriguez is asking the court to award damages for the wrongful death of his unborn child, permanently block Coeytaux from providing abortion-inducing drugs in Texas, and prevent anyone connected to Coeytaux from suing him under California’s clawback law.

He also seeks court costs, attorneys’ fees, and any other relief the court deems appropriate.
