BARSTOW — At a recent community presentation, Barstow Community College President Dr. Eva Bagg outlined how the school is updating its programs to prepare for the Barstow International Gateway (BIG), a BNSF Railway project now in development.

Announced in 2022, the $1.5 billion project would create a 4,500-acre rail yard and logistics hub outside Barstow.

It is designed to receive freight from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, transfer containers to trains, and move goods nationwide.

Recently introduced FAA-certified drone program

Since 2018, the college has partnered with BNSF on a custom welding program, transforming an old fitness lab into a shop with 21 welding booths.

Students have already earned certifications that put them on track for industrial careers.

More recently, the college has added training in supply chain automation. It also introduced a Federal Aviation Administration–certified drone program, anticipating future logistics needs tied to BIG.

Mechanical and electrical training is also expanding.

New certifications in equipment maintenance and repair are being developed, and the Veterans Electrical Program now helps former service members transition into union apprenticeships in high-demand trades.

‘We’re here to train the workforce’

To strengthen these efforts, the college has brought in instructors with direct industry experience, including a retired BNSF employee.

“We’re here to train the workforce and to support the facility,” Bagg said. “We’re really excited to strengthen our partnership with the city.”
