FBI offers $25,000 reward in hiker shooting and robbery in California

CALIFORNIA – The FBI’s San Diego Field Office announced September 26 a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those who assaulted and robbed four hikers near the U.S.–Mexico border.

On January 22, 2025, around 10:37 a.m., four hikers were shot at and robbed at gunpoint by two unidentified Hispanic men about 1,000 feet from the U.S.–Mexico border.

The suspects fired toward the hikers, striking one, before approaching and robbing them at gunpoint.

The hiker’s injuries were non-life-threatening.

Special Agent in Charge Mark Dargis said no one should ever fear being shot at and robbed at gunpoint—regardless of where they are.

“The FBI will not stop until we find the individuals responsible for this violent crime on these innocent hikers,” he said.

Last seen heading southwest toward border

The suspects were last seen heading southwest toward the U.S.–Mexico border.

All charges are accusations – individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI, a U.S. embassy, or submit a tip at tips.fbi.gov. All information can be submitted anonymously.
