California launches Operation Robocall Roundup to combat unwanted calls

Published on

CALIFORNIA – California attorney general Rob Bonta announced August 7, the launch of Operation Robocall Roundup, a bipartisan multistate effort by the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force to fight robocalls nationwide.

YouMail, a service that helps users block unwanted calls, found that Californians received an estimated 2.47 billion robocalls so far in 2025.

As part of the operation, Bonta and 51 attorneys general sent warning letters to 37 voice service providers, demanding they stop illegal robocalls on their networks.

Bonta said this is a nationwide problem that requires nationwide solutions.

“Robocalls are annoying, can facilitate scams that result in real financial losses for Californians, and can unintentionally cut people off from communication from their loved ones for fear of robocalls,” said Bonta.

Crackdown on non-compliant providers

The operation targets providers that ignore FCC traceback requests, skip registering in the Robocall Mitigation Database, or fail to file plans to reduce illegal robocalls.

By ignoring customer protection rules, these companies let robocalls enter their networks and pass them on until they reach California.

The Task Force will also notify more than 99 downstream providers that do business with the 37 non-compliant companies.

The FCC is reviewing several companies and has removed seven from the Robocall Mitigation Database. This means other providers will no longer be allowed to accept and route any calls from their networks.
