CALIFORNIA – Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statement, March 17, in regards to the death of San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputy Hector Cuevas Jr.
“Jennifer and I are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Deputy Cuevas. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues as they navigate this unimaginable time. His dedication to protecting and serving his community was remarkable, and we are eternally grateful for his service,” said Newsom.
Cuevas was in pursuit of a stolen vehicle
On March 17, 2025, Cuevas was in pursuit of a stolen vehicle when he was involved in a traffic crash with another vehicle at an intersection in Victorville. Cuevas’ car was split in two after hitting a light pole.
He suffered injuries as a result of the collision and died at the scene.
The female driver of the other vehicle was transported to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect, 22-year-old Ryan Turner, was later arrested on vehicular manslaughter and other charges. Turner was previously arrested for evading police and causing another officer to crash.
‘We will be ever grateful as a community’
Cuevas worked out of the Victorville station and was well known in the community.
He spent six years with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department after previously serving with the Upland Police Department.
The father of two attended Central State University in Ohio, where he played football. Cuevas later became a high school football coach at Carter High in Rialto, the school he once attended.
“I could not be more proud of Hector Cuevas. He walks the walk, and walks the line. And unfortunately today he gave his life and for that we will be ever grateful as a community,” said San Bernardino County sheriff Shannon Dicus at a press conference.
In honor of Deputy Cuevas, flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff.
