CALIFORNIA – A group of Danish citizens have gathered almost 200,000 signatures for their petition to “Buy California.’ The satirical campaign is in response to President Donald Trump’s desire to acquire Greenland.
“Have you ever looked at a map and thought, “You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates.” Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality. Let’s buy California from Donald Trump!” the citizens declare on the Demarkification website.
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. The U.S. controls Pituffik Space Base on the island.
Trump said at a press conference on January 7 that the U.S. needed Greenland for “national security purposes.”
“People really don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to it, but if they do, they should give it up because we need it for national security,” said Trump.
Both Denmark and Greenland rejected the idea, emphasizing that Greenland is not for sale.
‘Most ruined state in the union’
The petition says Trump might sell California because he isn’t exactly California’s biggest fan.
“He’s called it “the most ruined state in the Union” and has feuded with its leaders for years. We’re pretty sure he’d be willing to part with it for the right price,” said the petition.
This tension is evident in Governor Gavin Newsom’s ‘Trump-proofing’ of California.
Newsom signed two bills, February 7, that allocates a total of $50 million with half going towards legal challenges that may arise against the Trump administration.
The other $25 million was allocated for immigration and legal aid services.
The petition questions, ‘What about the will of the citizens?’
“Well, let’s face it – when has that ever stopped him? If Trump wants to sell California, he’ll sell California,” said the petition.
The campaign says it will bring their ‘bestest negotiators – Lego executives and the cast of Borgen.’
“And hey, we’ll even throw in a lifetime supply of Danish pastries to sweeten the deal,” said the petition.
Trump considering military force to acquire Greenland and the Panama Canal
During the press conference, Trump said he could not assure the world that he would not use military force to acquire Greenland and also the Panama Canal.
“I can’t assure you — you’re talking about Panama and Greenland. No, I can’t assure you on either of those two. But I can say this, we need them for economic security. The Panama Canal was built for our military,” said Trump.
Using military force to gain control of Greenland could trigger Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) founding treaty.
If any NATO member believes its territory, political independence, or security is at risk, it can request consultations with other members to discuss the threat and determine appropriate responses.
Trump has also expressed interest in acquiring Canada and the Gaza Strip.
