SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY – Governor Gavin Newsom announced, July 17, that the Department of Industrial Relations awarded $31 million in California Opportunity Youth Apprenticeship (COYA) grants to 51 projects including two awards in San Bernardino County totaling $1.3 million.
The grant funding is to increase pre-apprenticeships and apprenticeships in healthcare, education, advanced manufacturing, information technology, public sector, transportation and more.
“California is committed to helping disadvantaged youth prepare for high-quality careers. Through our nation-leading career education efforts, we’re boosting apprenticeships throughout the state and across industries to help young people launch into the right career for them,” said Newsom.
San Bernardino County apprenticeship projects
Opportunity youth are aged 16-24, that includes young parents, former foster youth, people with disabilities, and young people who face educational achievement gaps or attend schools in communities struggling with high poverty.
The state awarded Teamsters Local 1932 Training Center in San Bernardino $300,000 for pre-apprenticeship training for certified nursing assistant, licensed vocational nurse and phlebotomy.
Pre-apprenticeship training programs aim to provide foundational skills and knowledge that will help participants succeed in a formal apprenticeship.
El Sol Neighborhood Educational Center in San Bernardino also received a $1 million award for apprenticeship implementation for community health workers and home visitors.
Apprenticeship implementation refers to the process of establishing and running apprenticeship programs within an organization.
Break career barriers
According to the news release, these apprenticeships will help break career barriers for opportunity youth across California, helping them launch into their future careers.
