VICTORVILLE – The City of Victorville announced August 7 that it recently worked on restoring and protecting the Mojave Riverbed and Oro Grande Wash.
Over four weeks, 34 city employees cleared 51 tons of debris from 3.15 miles.
The team cleared storm drains, removed illegal dumps, and cut dead vegetation to reduce fire risk. Such operations reduce fire and flood risks while protecting vital water resources.
The city said the Victorville Water District depends on groundwater beneath the Mojave Riverbed and Oro Grande Wash for safe, reliable drinking water. However, surface water flows over the groundwater basin can harm it, especially if contaminated.
Protecting these surface water corridors from pollutants is essential to safeguard this vital resource.
Frustration over desert dumping
Victorville mayor Liz Becerra said it’s frustrating that people keep dumping in the desert despite free city disposal services.
These include drop-off centers, bulky item pick up, dump days, and more.
“We encourage community members to take advantage of our free services and dispose of unwanted items the right way,” said Becerra.
City officials remind residents to help protect this resource while quarterly cleanups continue.
