California city offering 24 months of rental assistance for low-income residents

CALIFORNIA – The city of Milpitas announced that it has partnered with FORWARD – a  program administration for local governments, to launch the city’s Workforce Housing Rental Assistance Program (WHRAP) round two.

The program provides rental assistance for low-income Milpitas residents.

Milpitas allocated $773,341 in Permanent Local Housing Allocation (PLHA) funding. City officials said the program aims to provide eligible residents with the financial support they need to ease rising rent expenses.

Round one, which closed last June, is currently underway and is providing 22 households with rental assistance for 24 months.

Round two offers 24 months of rent support for up to 28 low-income households in the city.

Milpitas Mayor Carmen Montano said the program provides a safety net for residents facing housing challenges.

“By supporting these households with rental assistance for 24 months, we’re highlighting our commitment to creating a Milpitas where everyone can thrive,” Montano said.

Emergency rental assistance

California has some of the highest housing costs in the nation. Many residents spend over 30% of their income on rent, making affordability a challenge.

Several California cities and agencies have offered emergency rental assistance for residents struggling with housing costs.
