California tech companies partner with federal government to offer $200K jobs — no degree required

CALIFORNIA — The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) announced on December 15 a new federal initiative called the U.S. Tech Force.

The program aims to recruit roughly 1,000 technology professionals, including engineers, AI specialists, data scientists, and cybersecurity experts, to fill government roles.

The roles offer salaries of up to $200,000 a year and professional development opportunities over two‑year assignments. 

California-based companies partnering with Tech Force include Adobe, AMD, Anduril, Apple, Box, C3.ai, Coinbase, Databricks, Google Public Sector, Nvidia, OpenAI, Palantir, Robinhood, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Uber, xAI, and Zoom. 

Other initial private sector partners include Amazon Web Services, Dell Technologies, Docusign, and IBM.

According to the site, a traditional degree is not required, however, candidates should demonstrate strong technical skills through work experience, projects, or certifications.

Office of Personnel Management (OPM) director Scott Kupor said this is a clarion call.

“Tech Force offers the chance to build and lead projects of national importance, while creating powerful career opportunities in both public service and the private sector,” Kupor said.

Positions primarily based in Washington, D.C.

Announced and backed by the White House, the program comes amid a national effort to modernize federal technology systems and deepen artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities across government.

Tech Force participants will be placed across multiple federal agencies, including the Department of Defense, Treasury, and Health and Human Services. 

Positions are primarily based in Washington, D.C., though some roles may be available at agency locations across the country. Remote work options vary by agency and role.

The standard commitment is a two-year employment term, with opportunities for extension based on agency needs and participant interest.
