BARSTOW – The Barstow Police Department announced on October 29 that, due to the ongoing government shutdown and the temporary freeze of SNAP benefits, that they are taking proactive steps to support the community during this challenging time.

The USDA announced that November SNAP benefits will not be issued amid the federal government shutdown.

“Bottom line, the well has run dry,” said a message on the USDA site.

Barstow Police Department officials said they understand that these circumstances may cause additional stress for many families.

“To help ensure the safety of residents, customers, and business owners, officers will be conducting extra patrols around local grocery stores, convenience stores, and shopping centers,” Barstow police said in a Facebook post.

They continued that the increased patrols are not in response to any specific incident.

Instead, they are a preventive measure designed to maintain public safety, deter theft, and reassure the community that law enforcement is present and ready to help.

Community reaction

There were mixed reactions from the community in the comments of the Facebook post.

One user replied, “You should have food baskets ready to hand out, the people would appreciate that and feel like the police are with them instead of against.”

Another commented, “You could be handing out food but you’re going to make sure the Most Vulnerable People don’t steal. Great message.”

Others showed support for the announcement.

“The police do not give out free food! The police are protecting businesses. There are other nonprofit organizations in the community who provide food: churches, food banks, etc. Thank you, Barstow, for doing this!” one user commented.

Someone else said, “These are desperate times for some, but looting and theft from local businesses can’t be tolerated. There are other community resources and assistance still available in the toughest of circumstances.”
