DUI Crash in Apple Valley Leaves One Dead, One Injured

APPLE VALLEY – The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department announced deputies, firefighters, and paramedics responded to a two-vehicle crash around 11:36 p.m. Saturday, September 20. 

The collision occurred on Kiowa Road near Kiowa Place.

Deputies determined that a white Nissan Altima, driven by 23-year-old Exon Herrera Hernandez, was traveling north on Kiowa Road.

Ahead of it was a white Hummer H2 carrying a 44-year-old man and passenger Salvador Rubio Tamayo.

Herrera Hernandez rear-ended the Hummer, sending it off the road and causing it to roll.

The driver and Rubio Tamayo sustained major injuries and were taken to hospitals. The driver later died from his injuries. Rubio Tamayo remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The investigation found Herrera Hernandez was under the influence of alcohol. 

Deputies arrested Herrera Hernandez for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and booked him into the High Desert Detention Center.

A Sheriff’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) investigator is handling the case. 

Kiowa Road was closed between Del Oro Road and Caribou Avenue for about seven hours as deputies investigated and interviewed witnesses.
