BARSTOW — City officials confirmed September 19 the death of 2-year-old Xavier Aguilera, who was swept away during Thursday night’s flooding on West Main Street near Lenwood Road.

After more than 20 hours of searching, responders found his body in the San Bernardino County Flood Control channel south of the Mojave River.

The flooding began around 7:14 p.m. on September 18, when a vehicle was swept into a wash. Inside were 26-year-old Brandon Padilla Aguilera and his son, Xavier. Both were carried away by the current and became separated.

Brandon was rescued from a small island, treated at Barstow Community Hospital, and later released.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time. We extend our deepest condolences to those affected by this tragedy,” city officials said.

Residents are urged to use extreme caution

City officials emphasized that the safety of residents remains the top priority.

“We continue to monitor weather and flooding conditions and urge all community members to exercise extreme caution around flooded areas and follow all emergency advisories,” they said.

The city also asked the public to respect the family’s privacy. Counseling and support are available through the Barstow Police Department.

Officials thanked the many agencies, emergency crews, and volunteers who worked tirelessly in challenging conditions.

Barstow Police and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office are continuing the investigation.
