California lawmakers condemn political violence following Charlie Kirk’s death

CALIFORNIA – California lawmakers have expressed outrage following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, September 10, at Utah Valley University.

Kirk, 31, was delivering a speech when he was struck in the neck by a sniper-style shot from approximately 200 feet away.

Utah governor Spencer Cox called the fatal shooting a “political assassination.” Authorities are actively searching for the perpetrator, according to FBI director Kash Patel.

California governor Gavin Newsom condemned the attack and said he admired Kirk’s passion and commitment to debate.

“His senseless murder is a reminder of how important it is for all of us, across the political spectrum, to foster genuine discourse on issues that deeply affect us all without resorting to political violence,” Newsom said.

‘Acts of violence must never be tolerated’

Other officials also denounced political violence. Senator Tony Strickland, R-Huntington Beach, said acts of violence must never be tolerated — regardless of political beliefs.

Representative Jimmy Gomez, D-Los Angeles, wrote, “I may not agree with Charlie Kirk on politics, but I am deeply disturbed to hear about the shooting. Violence has no place in our democracy, no matter who it targets or what views they hold.”

Kirk’s death is the most recent high-profile act of political violence. In June, a separate attack killed Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband and critically injured senator John Hoffman and his wife.

Kirk founded Turning Point USA

Kirk, who founded Turning Point USA, was known for his efforts to engage young conservatives on college campuses. His death has prompted vigils and tributes across the country.
