CALIFORNIA – FinanceBuzz published a new report, November 15, listing the cost to purchase a turkey across the U.S. They found that it would cost Californians $39.85 for a 15-pound turkey this Thanksgiving.
On average, Americans can expect to pay $31.16 for a 15-pound turkey — an average of $2.08 per pound.
The report says to determine the average cost for a turkey in 2024, they collected prices from multiple U.S. grocery stores across the country. Then, they determined how much shoppers in each state can expect to pay for a Thanksgiving turkey this year.
The most expensive and affordable states
California ranked the third most expensive state to purchase a turkey. Hawaii took the top spot with the cost of a turkey being $52.85 and Alaska came in second place at $44.85. The report says Hawaii and Alaska are also ranked as the most expensive states to live in.
The report also ranked the states with the most affordable turkeys.
Oklahoma is listed as the state with the most affordable turkeys – $19.75. Louisiana comes in second most affordable with the turkey cost listed at $19.80 and Mississippi, in third with the cost being $22.30.
Average price less than last year
According to the report, the average turkey price has fallen since last year.
“Across the country, 15-pound turkey cost an average of $31.16 ($2.08 per pound) in 2024, compared with $35.40 ($2.36 per pound) in 2023,” says the report.
The price reduction represents a decrease of 12% from last year to now.
