APPLE VALLEY – In celebration of A Better, Greener, Way of Life, the Town of Apple Valley is hosting a community cleanup day, September 17. Schools, clubs, churches and individuals are invited to participate in cleaning up designated areas of town.
The town usually hosts 2 annual cleanup days where residents not only volunteer to help pick up trash but can discard yard waste, household trash, broken small appliances, furniture, or metal. The hosted community cleanup days are also an effort to combat illegal dumping.
In a 2020 news release, it was reported that Apple Valley Police and Code Enforcement officers responded to the area of Del Oro and Kiowa roads to investigate illegal dumping. They observed a rented U-Haul truck with both driver and an occupant illegally dumping trash into the open desert.
They were issued criminal citations for illegal dumping and their vehicle was towed.
“It is unfortunate that people choose to desecrate our beautiful open deserts needlessly. All of the waste they were illegally dumping could have been dropped off for free at any one of the Town’s Cleanup Days,” said Code Enforcement Manager Guy Eisenbrey in the 2020 news release. “I encourage residents to report similar activity to keep our neighborhoods and our desert clean.”
Volunteers are encouraged to sign up in advance to receive cleanup site assignments. A free t-shirt and catered lunch by the Pizza Factory are usually provided, while supplies last.
