APPLE VALLEY – Apple Valley will post reduced speed limit signs, this Spring, on 13 segments in town.

The town’s traffic consultant conducted an engineering and traffic survey last year on 52 street segments. It was recommended that 34 segments maintain the current speed limit, 13 segments decrease the speed limit, and speed limit signs should be added to five streets.

Speed limit signs across 13 segments of town will be reduced by 5 miles per hour.

One of the busiest intersections, Apple Valley Rd at Bear Valley Rd, had a traffic count of 53,580 in 2016. The segment will have the speed limit sign reduced from 50 to 45.

Signs with a 45 miles per hour speed limit will be posted at segments on South Rd, Sandia Rd, Ottawa Rd and Nisqually Rd. No signs are currently posted in these segments.

Reduced speed limit signs and added signage is part of the town’s ongoing efforts to improve traffic safety.

Last year, the The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) awarded the Apple Valley police Department a $69,960 grant. The funding provides for increased DUI patrols, officer training, community presentations and other additional traffic safety efforts.

A 2021 OTS annual survey reported traffic fatalities increased 3.4 percent from 3,719 in 2019 to 3,847 in 2020 statewide.

Apple Valley’s DUI special patrols will focus on impaired drivers, California’s hands-free cell phone law and other behaviors that put pedestrians and bicyclists at risk.
