CALIFORNIA – Voltu Motor, a manufacturer of zero-emission commercial vehicles, announced December 5, that it received approval from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to commercialize its zero-carbon Class 3 trucks.

“The certification process involved extensive documentation and validation, demonstrating Voltu’s commitment to meet California’s rigorous emissions standards,” said Voltu Motor chief commercial officer Juan Ignacio Artola.

The company recently said that it will locate its headquarters and manufacturing facility in Riverside. The city committed to purchasing 20 Voltu electrified Ford F-350 crew cab four-wheel drive trucks for use by its utilities, streets, and parks field crews.

Trucks have a 350-mile range

According to a 2024 industry report by MarketsandMarkets, the worldwide market for electric commercial vehicles is projected to grow from $60 billion in 2024 to over $255 billion by 2030, driven by stricter emissions regulations, rising fuel costs, and advancements in battery technology.

Voltu Motor says businesses can realize an average savings per mile of $0.33 with an estimated annual savings of over $6,150 in fuel consumption.

The trucks are built to perform with a payload of 4,400 pounds and towing more than 17,000 pounds.

They operate at a full range to 350 miles and take 30 minutes to power up from 20 to 80%.

Projected to generate $1.6 billion in revenue

The Argentine company expects to create over 400 direct jobs within four years, eventually scaling up to 700 positions and generating over 1,200 indirect jobs. Voltu’s facility is projected to produce 14,000 vehicles in its first three years, generating $1.6 billion in revenue.

The University of California, Riverside said Voltu will also help municipalities comply with California state law, which requires them to add zero-emission vehicles to their fleets as a percentage of purchases each year.

Currently, 50% of municipal vehicle purchases must be zero-emission, increasing to 100% by January 1, 2027.

The company is slated to begin in 2025.
