High Desert cities rank in the top 10 nationally for super commuters

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY – A new study by Apartment List, published June 20, found that Hesperia, Apple Valley and Victorville ranked in the top 10 nationally for super commuters.

The study says super commuters – Americans that spend at least 90 minutes each way traveling to and from work, are growing in number.

Southern California has more than 300,000 super commuters

According to the report, the national average for workers who super commute is 2.7%.

However, 14.6 % of workers in Hesperia are super commuters. In Apple Valley, 13.2% of workers are super commuters and 11.8% are in Victorville. These cities are ranked number 3, 5 and 7 nationally.

The nation’s highest super-commuter rate can be found in Palmdale, where 16.9% of all workers commute at least 90 minutes for work.

Southern California has more than 300,000 super commuters, according to Apartment List researcher Rob Warnock.

“Connected to Los Angeles by traffic-snarled freeways and limited transit options, workers in these cities must tolerate long commutes in order to access the higher wages offered in the urban core,” said Warnock.

Super commuting and its implications

Warnock says more employers are shifting back to in-person or hybrid work arrangements putting more drivers on the road.

These worsening commutes for drivers increase car-related expenses, impact physical health, and amplify the environmental consequences of suburban sprawl.

“Altogether, this trend may increase tension between workers and employers, as they negotiate working arrangements that affect their commutes,” said Warnock.

The study concludes that dense construction can improve housing opportunities so that those who wish to live closer to work can afford to do so.
