CALIFORNIA – Tradeswomen, one of California’s first organizations for women in the trades, is hosting an entry-level apprenticeship virtual workshop June 20. The organization says apprenticeships are an opportunity for people to get paid while they are learning a skilled trade.
The average prevailing wage of trade apprentices in California typically ranges from $30 to $45 or higher per hour, depending on factors such as the trade, location, and level of experience.
Minimum qualifications
According to the website, applicants generally must:
- Have a driver’s license;
- Be 18 years old to go to work;
- Have a high school diploma or GED;
- Have strong math skills.
In addition, the site says that although a trade career has high pay, prospective apprentices should expect downtime.
“Building trades can be affected by rain or snow. This requires keen financial planning skills to plan for the days (and sometimes months) you may be out of work,” said the site.
Virtual workshop
Tradeswomen says during the workshop recruiters guide prospective applicants through a 1-hour workshop. They provide information about opportunities in the applicant’s area, what to expect, and how they can mentor applicants along the way.
Trade opportunities listed on the website include:
- Boilermaker
- Bricklayer
- Carpenter
- Electrician
- Operating Engineer
- Elevator Constructor
- Painter
- Roofer
- Plasters
The upcoming virtual workshop on Thursday, June 20 is taking place at 6 p.m. The workshop also takes place every third Thursday of the month. To register for the virtual workshop visit https://tradeswomen.org/get-started/ or email [email protected] or call 510-890-1243.
